The school library media practicum provides a unique opportunity for students interested in a career in K-12 librarianship to gain professional experience in a school library. Students may earn three graduate credits by working 120 hours under the supervision of professional librarians. Placements for the practicum will be arranged after consultation with the student, professional librarians, and practicum coordinator. Students must complete 120 hours in at least two library settings. No less than 40 hours must be completed at each of the two levels, K-6 and 7-12. Students should consult county and state requirements in order to insure that the correct number of hours are obtained for their individual certification needs. The practicum is graded Pass/Fail. Prerequisites include 872 and permission of Practicum Coordinator.
Procedures for Students
Contact the Practicum Coordinator at least the semester before the Practicum is to be completed. In cooperation with the coordinator, agree on at least two placements that allow for ample time at the two levels, K-6 and 7-12 and review the specific requirements for the practicum.
